Organiser's Report
The weather was fine and
sunny, with occasional strong headwinds.
The river level was the
lowest we could remember due to the lack of rain over the past few weeks and
the exceptional hot sunshine.
Attendance was very low –
reflecting the low water level - with 32 boats and 47 paddlers. Several
groups had enquired about the water level prior to the race and wondered
whether we were going to cancel!
Conex once again sponsored
the race, and based on the participating numbers over the previous few years
we were able to increase the number of trophies to include second and third
places in some classes. Sincere thanks to Conex!
Many boats got stuck on the
rocks and the crews had to get out into the water to push them off. One
kayak got caught between a rock and another boat, and the paddler had to
exit into the water to escape. Many thanks to Steve and Caroline for
affecting a rescue and helping empty the kayak. This of course
lost them some time, but
demonstrated the fine spirit in which the race is conducted.
It is good to have younger
paddlers doing well, with Connor Turner aged 13 years taking 3rd place.
Thanks to Ruth, Charles and
Kirsty for their help.
We look forward to seeing you all again next year –
May Day Bank Holiday,
Monday May 7th 2012 – 12 noon start.
David Mills.
